Three Model Years of Jeep Cherokee Recalled

“Park Outside,” Jeep Says. Over 200,000 Jeep Cherokee vehicles are being recalled due to fire risks. Again.

If you own a Jeep Cherokee within the model year range of 2014-2016, keep an eye out for a very important letter. Around 219,000 vehicles are being recalled due to a serious fire risk. Until a letter confirms you are at risk, Jeep urges you to park outside. Naturally, it also means away from flammable structures and other vehicles. Since the fire can happen with the car either on or off, Jeep is working tirelessly to remedy this. By June 30, if your car is afflicted, you’ll get a letter with more precise instructions on where to bring your vehicle and how it will be fixed.

According to Jeep, the fires result from a short in the rear lift gate. Jeep recalled the Cherokee back in 2015 for a similar issue. And if you’ve had the rear gate fixed as a result, you’ll need to have it fixed again, Jeep says. Jeep states that the issue is a global one — with the affliction impacting 132,000 American SUVs, 23,000 in Canada, 3,000 in Mexico, and about 60,000 elsewhere. Though, the Cherokee certainly isn’t the first SUV to fall victim to fire risk recalls. The Kia Telluride is making a huge name for itself for spontaneously catching fire, as well as some Kia vans. The Korean automaker has since recalled over 500,000 vehicles due to risks.

For now, Jeep says to hold tight and park cautiously. The fire can happen at any time and without provocation, so it’s unpredictable and dangerous. It’s sad to say, but the 2014-2016 year range is not a good one. Across several owner’s forums, vehicle history reports and even expert reviews, those years weren’t good for the Cherokee moniker. Transmission issues, oil leaks, and a faulty throttle position sensor caused engine stalling or total failure. Though, it is very safe to say that Jeep has learned from their mistakes and improved the Cherokee immensely.
