Which Roof Rack is Right for Your Wrangler?

Which Roof Rack is Right for Your Wrangler?

By -

The Jeep Wrangler has little cargo space, so a roof rack is a great way to add capacity. Now comes the hard part: which rack do you buy?

As any Wrangler owner knows, the cargo space in a Jeep is minimal compared with other SUVs. In order to keep the short overhangs that make the Jeep so capable off-road, the rear cargo room is small. If you want to take a family of four camping in your Wrangler, then you may be looking to add more cargo space. You have the options of towing a trailer or using a trailer-hitch-mounted rack or adding a roof rack. If you plan to use the Jeep on the trails or to overland, then a roof rack may be the only option. So, which rack should you get and why?

There are tons of roof rack options on the market, and you can even mix brands between mounts with rack frames. In order to narrow down the best options, though, you need to decide how you are going to use the rack. One of the big options is the side rails. Some roof racks use a raised railing around the frame to secure cargo. The downside to this railing is that it will make additional wind noise when the rack is empty. The upside is the railing allows you to carry more cargo, and it is generally easier to secure. A flat roof rack will make less wind noise when not in use. Also, it gives you more options for longer cargo, like skis or lumber.
