Next-Gen Wrangler Could Do Away With Traditional Soft Top

2014 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition

I can’t imagine this one going over well here, but I guess someone has to be the bearer of the bad news. Yup, in case you haven’t heard by now, it looks like the roll-back soft top, which has been a longtime staple with Wranglers, will soon become a thing of the past. According to a Car and Driver report, the traditional piece will be replaced by removable panels on the next-gen Wrangler.

And if that weren’t enough, the sports bar — or “roll bar” as it’s more commonly called — is also being ditched for a more integrated substructure, all in the name of progress.

Apparently, the new design will make it easier for engineers to optimize the Wrangler’s body for better torsional rigidity and get a jump on any NHTSA safety mandates on the horizon.

The question is, how will it all go over with current Jeep fans?
