Newbie Seeks Jeep Wrangler Purchase Advice: What’s up in the Forums

Finding the perfect first Jeep on a budget can be daunting for a novice. So let’s help this one score the right ride!

We’ve all been there. Young, flush with cash (OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration), and looking to buy our first Jeep. But there are so many options out there on the used car market, where do you begin? Well, a good place to start is by asking the seasoned Jeep owners over at JK-Forum what they think, obviously. So that’s exactly where member kancer86 decided to go to gather up some expert opinions before plunking down his hard earned cash on a new ride.

“You probably get this a lot, but I need some advice on purchasing my first Jeep. Looking at used ones and I’m torn between an older Rubicon or a 2012+ Sport or Sahara. Don’t really need the Rubi but always wanted one. Budget is $20K CND. However, in my area, that means an older ’07-’09 Rubicon with mods already done. And I’m always apprehensive about a stock 2012+ Sport or Sahara, which wouldn’t allow for any room in the budget for mods for a while.

I’m Currently in talks with a private seller about one. Owner states he did the work himself. But he’s willing to let me take it to a mechanic to check over all his work. He did say that the electronic sway bar disconnect isn’t working. Price is pretty decent considering the mileage and the area. And he’s open to offers, but I’d like to get it for around $17K CDN. Another option is the 2012+ with the newer (better motor IMO), but I’m impatient. This would be used for basically bumming around town and occasional entry level off-roading and hunting. Lemme know what you guys think! I appreciate your input!”

Tough choices, indeed. But our members aren’t shy about providing some feedback to help make that decision a little easier.

“Given your last sentence, I’d go 2012+ as I don’t see you using any of the Rubicon equipment (lockers, e-disco sway bar, lower gears, 4:1 transfer case),” said jedg.

“I agree. Get the newer interior and more power,” adds TheDirtman“I would want stock or near stock as so many don’t know what they are doing in terms of lifts and other mods. I have seen some really dumb stuff roll thru Nate’s shop.”

“Agree with all of the above,” said resharp001“Go newer, and unmolested at that. Even if it means you have to wait a bit to mod it due to budget. At least you will know EXACTLY what has been done to it. You can have heck of a lot of fun in a stock Jeep, still!”

So far, it appears that we’ve got a consensus. But do we, really? Head over here, chime in, and help the OP make the right choice the first time around!
