LSX-Powered Jeep Willys Blows Up During Drag Race
Ah, the iconic and patriotic Willys. The trusty and heroic pre-Jeep that carried brave soldiers into the battlefield, has now found a home on drag strips across the country — and with way more horsepower than it was ever designed for.
Such is the case of this 1952 Willys, which along with its military livery, sports big Mickey Thompson tires and a 300-horsepower Chevy LSX engine — yup, a Chevy. While it may be a bit sacrilegious to not stuff a HEMI engine under the hood, this Jeep is already way out of its element, so what the hell, right?
As you can see in the video below, this 1,200-pound Willys is more than a handful at the drag strip, or at least it was until it blew a huge hole in the block (should’ve gone with a HEMI). Thankfully, its fortune-telling owner had a feeling something like that would eventually happen, and even had a backup engine ready to be installed.
But still, a military-liveried, LSX-powered Jeep for the drag strip… it just doesn’t make much sense, does it?
