JK-Forum’s Scale Project Axial Jeep Wrangler Unlimited SCX10 Part 3
Now that we’ve got our RC Jeep off-roading, it’s time to start getting into the modifications we need to buy outside of the standard model. This update will work on lighting, spare tire clearance, and the first steering upgrade. These are still inexpensive items that you can get from Axial, G6 Racing, and STRC.
The first of the upgrades are the steering links from STRC. These are aluminum links that require you to have end links, but will get away from the stock plastic pieces that tend to bend and flex as you drive around rocks.
Next is removing the spare tire carrier and switching to the G6 Racing Recovery Tow Strap. We opted for the High-Visibility Yellow. This moves the spare tire up into the rear cage and gives the SCX10 a bit more clearance as the truck moves up and down in tight rocks.
Finally, we added some lights for nighttime crawling action. The front set are universal Rigid Light Bars that use 5mm LEDs. In the rear I added two red LEDs to the back bumper and a blue LED on one of the D-ring brackets using some screws, a spare rod end, and some washers. The lights are powered by two nine-volt batteries that I ran in parallel to get single nine-volt power but two nine-volt batteries worth of run time.
The LEDs I simply sourced from EBay. They are based on the GT Power RC LED Car Kit, but are an off brand. There are a few issues I’ll still have to work out for wiring, but will work for now.
