Wrangler Rubicon from Lego features working steering, huge mud tires and lots of suspension travel.

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most iconic vehicles in the history of the American automotive industry. The Wrangler and the vehicles which proceeded that official name have been showcased in video games, movies, television shows and toy lineups, but remarkably, the Lego brand has never offered a Jeep of any kind. That changes on January 1, 2021, when the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon arrives in the Lego Technic lineup.

The Lego brand has spent the past few years introducing an array of new cars, trucks and SUVs to their lineup of brick-built vehicles. The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T were introduced as a pair in the Lego Speed Champions lineup and earlier this year, the 1970 Dodge Charger from The Fast and the Furious joined the Lego Technic lineup. The newest collaboration between FCA and Lego is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and this is sure to be a popular item for children and adults who love the Trail Rated brand.

”The Jeep Wrangler is an icon in the off-road world,” said Lars Thygesen, Designer, LEGO Technic. “The Rubicon has a lot of the iconic details loved by 4×4 fans the world over, so it was important to me to pack as many of the authentic, powerful features of the real vehicle into the LEGO Technic replica. I hope LEGO fans and vehicle lovers enjoy all aspects, including the suspension, winch and open-air design that we developed alongside the talented Jeep design team.”

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in the Lego Technic lineup is item number 42122 and it is recommended for users ages nine and older. The kit includes 665 pieces which, when assembled, create a miniature two-door Wrangler that measures 9.5-inches long, 4.5-inches high and 5-inches wide. The body is bright yellow with black trim and, even as the Rubicon package goes, this small-scale Jeep is heavily modified.

The Lego Jeep Wrangler has working doors and hood, with a tiny Pentastar V6 engine cover. The steering system works, but rather than relying on the steering wheel inside of the cab, the front wheel angle is controlled by a knob in the rear seating area. This makes for easier turning during play. The Lego Wrangler also features working suspension with loads of articulation, making plenty of room for the huge off-road tires when climbing over obstacles. There is even an off-road roof rack, complete with off-road lights and a working winch is mounted in the front bumper.

Best of all, the boxy form of the Wrangler works perfectly with the natural form of a Lego-based vehicle, making for an easily-recognizable Jeep.

“Ask any Jeep Wrangler owner and they’ll tell you that their vehicle is just a bigger version of this new LEGO set,” said Mark Allen, Head of Jeep Design. “The design of the Jeep Wrangler allows them to take it apart, top off, doors off, reconfigure it, add new pieces from our Mopar team, and then put it back together again. This LEGO Technic Jeep Wrangler should bring a new level of joy to our Jeep enthusiasts and help inspire future designers to the brand.”

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
