Jeep Wrangler Owner Saved Seconds Before Train Smashes Into It
Like a scene out of a movie, this Jeep Wrangler driver found himself in a perilous situation before a group of heroes sprung into action.
Each year, more than a handful of vehicles are struck by trains, a surprising fact since, well, avoiding such a fate is relatively easy, for the most part. But even though train crossings are typically equipped with lights, signage, or even barriers that come down when a train is approaching, people oftentimes ignore those warnings with disastrous results. However, a recent incident in Portage, Michigan involving a Jeep Wrangler was a bit different than the average train/automobile collision, as we can see in this report from MLive.
The driver of the Jeep Wrangler was involved in a crash with another vehicle early in the morning, but in an extremely unlucky twist of fate, the SUV landed on its side directly on top of the train tracks following the collision. Making matters worse, the driver was unable to get out of the vehicle himself due to severe back pain that he suffered as a result of the crash, though firefighters arrived on the scene rather quickly to lend a helping hand.
Problem was, as those firefighters were assessing the situation and trying to figure out the best way to extract the Wranger driver from his vehicle, a train whistle blew and the crossing signal started flashing, signaling that a train was barreling toward them. As most are well aware, it can take literal miles for a train to come to a complete stop, so this was a perilous situation, indeed.
Luckily, as we can see in the video, firefighters were able to get the man out of his Jeep a mere 15 seconds before the train crashed into it, which is a bit too close for comfort. It may not be one of those last-second rescues like we see in TV shows and movies, but for a real life situation, it’s close enough.
While it’s unclear whose fault this particular crash was, the other driver was apparently uninjured, while the Wrangler owner was taken to the hospital for treatment. Obviously, things could have ended much, much worse, but thanks to the heroic acts of a handful of emergency responders, everyone walked away in one piece.
