2021 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon 4xe

Jeep Wrangler 4xe was not only the company’s new best seller, it was also the best selling plug-in hybrid for 2022.

A Jeep Wrangler that can save both trips to the gas station and the planet? Who wouldn’t want one? According to a recent statement from Stellantis, the Wrangler 4xe not only became the Jeep brand’s top selling model, it was also the best selling plug-in hybrid in the country. From last year, sales were up a whopping 46% from 2021 — adding up to around 43,000 models sold. Stellantis reported that 1 of every 4 Wrangler’s sold was a 4xe.

The Wrangler 4xe was first unveiled at CES in 2020, and featured turbo four mated with two electric motors – one for the engine, and the other for the transmission. When combined with the 17-kWh battery pack, it makes for a combined 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. While it adds up to being the least efficient hybrid at 20-22 mpg combined, it didn’t keep people from forming lines at their local dealerships to buy one. After all, it’s hard to feel bad about what you bought if it’s got “hybrid” badging and cool light blue accents all over.

“We saw strong demand for our PHEV offerings in the face of industry market conditions that carried across 2021 into 2022, including production constraints and a disruption of parts and materials in general, which adversely affected our overall sales,” said Jeff Kommor, Stellantis’ U.S. sales chief.

Despite Americans silently demanding larger, more impractical SUVs from automakers, Jeep’s other hybrid model, the Grand Cherokee 4xe, didn’t sell nearly as well as the Wrangler variant. Only 5,813 models were sold, telling Jeep that making the Wrangler a hybrid was the best decision that company’s made yet. With an all-electric Wrangler coming soon, we’re eager to see how well it does once it starts hitting dealer lots. From hitting trails to hitting outlets, the Wrangler 4xe truly does it all.
