Wait, the Jeep Trackhawk Is Faster than a Dodge Demon?

This SUV has one big advantage over the Demon.

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a force to be reckoned with. It will also probably go down as one of the craziest cars ever built. Thanks to 840 horsepower coming from its 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi SRT V8, zero to 60 zooms by in 2.3 seconds. The sprint to 30 mph from a standstill takes just one second. As a drag-focused machine, it completes the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph. Those are ridiculous figures that enthusiasts only dreamed of as kids.

But FCA has been busy stuffing the mighty Hellcat engine into a lot of vehicles lately, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Thanks to the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that cranks out 707 hp and 645 pound-feet of torque, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, according to the automaker, is the quickest and most powerful gas-powered SUV ever.

How fast is the Trackhawk? Well, it’s faster than the Demon.

In a new video, Engineering Explained goes into detail on why the SUV is faster than the lighter, more powerful, track-focused Demon. Put the two vehicles against one another in a drag race and the Demon wins. But after a certain point, the Trackhawk will eventually pass the Demon. Why? Because the Demon tops out at 168 mph while the Trackhawk continues up past 180 mph.

The Demon may be the sportier of the two, but there’s one thing holding it back: Tires. Its bespoke Nitto drag radials affect the car’s top speed. Since the Demon’s rubber only has a “W” speed rating, it’s limited to a 168 mph top speed. On the other hand, the Trackhawk isn’t held back by its Pirelli tires, but by aerodynamics.

Now, a Demon owner could slap on some new tires and reprogram it to go like hell. In that case, Engineering Explained claims that 200 mph should be possible. But unless that happens en masse, Trackhawk owners can proudly sneer at Demon owners. Their SUV is faster than the craziest dragstrip special ever built.
