Jeep Patriot Could Return as Seven-Seat Compass for Global Markets

Jeep Patriot nameplate is reportedly making a comeback as a seven-seat version of the new Compass in India and Brazil.

The Jeep Patriot debuted alongside the Jeep Compass for the 2007 model year. It sold well for a number of years, despite a lack of major updates, but was ultimately discontinued following the 2017 model year. However, India automotive news site Rush Lane is now reporting that the Jeep Patriot will be making a comeback as a seven-seat, Compass-based crossover that will be sold in that country, as well as Brazil.

Jeep has already announced that it will sell four locally-built SUVs/crossovers in India, including a facelifted Compass and a seven-seat version of the Compass, as well as a subcompact crossover and the Grand Cherokee, which will join the already-on-sale Wrangler. Speculation has run rampant that the stretched version of the Compass will be called the Patriot, and there is some proof to support this notion.

For starters, Jeep still holds the trademark for the Patriot name, which it originally filed for in 2005 and doesn’t expire until 2025. Both the Compass and Patriot shared a platform and drivetrain when they were both on sale, and both were produced side-by-side in Illinois, with the Patriot adopting more of a bold design.

The new Patriot will essentially be a stretched-out version of the Compass, however, with additional seating and interior space. But rumors also indicate that it will have its own unique front-end styling influenced by the Grand Cherokee. It will reportedly be powered by the same 2.0-liter turbo-diesel present in the Compass, albeit with a bit more power to compensate for the added weight, with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and both front- and rear-wheel-drive versions available.

These revamped crossovers are critical for Jeep, which saw its sales plunge 52 percent in India from 2019 to 2020. Rush Lane blames this drop on high price tags, a lack of options, stiff competition, and the simple fact that the Compass is in sore need of some updates. The new Compass and its longer counterpart, the reborn Patriot, should go a long way in addressing all of those issues.

The Jeep Patriot is expected to launch sometime in 2022, and will be priced at around Rs 3,000,000 ($41,344 USD) to Rs 3,500,000 ($48,234 USD).
