NHTSA Investigates Jeep Liberty for Air Bag System

More than 100,000 vehicles from 2012 model year could be caught up in NHTSA probe.

Yet again, Jeep finds itself being potentially hit with another investigation by U.S. safety officials.

This latest inquiry is targeted specifically at 2012 model years for the Jeep Liberty for a faulty air bag system.
According to the Automotive News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received numerous complaints that the airbag control system in the Jeep has been failing. It could prevent the air bag from deploying in an accident.

Some owners note that the airbag warning light would stay on while they were driving. Others said the light turned off when they replaced the computer. That suggests there are some major inconsistencies in the system. It appears that NHTSA is currently digging into the frequency and potential full scope of vehicles that could possibly be affected by the system

All and all, roughly 105,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs could possibly be called into question as part of the investigation. However, so far, only 44 complaints have been filed with U.S. safety officials.

One Liberty owner reported that her airbag failed to deploy during an accident. Others said they learned it would cost close to $500 to replace the faulty system. And it’s currently not covered under any type of warranty from Jeep.

FCA is reportedly working with NHTSA to resolve the issue. FCA contends that the only safety feature affected by the problem is a head rest that’s capable of moving in the event the Jeep is in a crash, which helps to prevent occupants from sustaining injuries.

Either way, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear of FCA issuing an official recall for the Jeep in the near future.
