The First Real Performance SUV: Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9
Jeep has been ahead of the game for a while. We go back to the first performance SUV: The 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited.
With all the buzz about fast SUVs in the last few years, it easy to forget the predecessors. Go back 20 years. Do you remember the fast SUVs of the 1990s? Probably not, because not many of them were the whole package. Two decades ago we didn’t quite have the technology to pull off a fast and well handling SUV. We were just starting to explore the possibilities of a sports SUV market.
Matt Farah from The Smoking Tire does a “One Take” in the rare 5.9 liter 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. He reminisces how only the cool parents at his high school drove the beefed up Cherokees. The owner of this feisty Jeep has taken exceptional care of it, it’s like jumping back to the ’90s getting behind the wheel. While this almost 20 year old car is cool in its own right, the owner made some mods to assist in both on and off the road driving with throttle body headers, exhaust system, edu tune, 18 inch wheels, upgraded brakes, and off-road springs.

Farah gets on the Grand Cherokee a bit to push the redline, and gets a smile out of its 5.9 liter’s growl and power engagement. Not to mention, this Jeep has not been stored away, she has over 180,000 miles on the clock. We at JK Forum say ‘thank you’ to the Grand Cherokee 5.9 for paving the way for fast SUVs like the Trackhawk.
