Jeep Cherokee Named ‘Most American Vehicle’ Two Years in a Row

You simply can’t buy a more American vehicle than the new Jeep Cherokee, according to Cars.com’s 2019 ‘American-Made’ Index.

We hear it all the time – buy American. But unfortunately, doing just that has become harder and harder in recent years. Cheap overseas labor has led many American manufacturers to move their facilities elsewhere, or just source their parts from other countries. This is especially true in the automotive world, of course. However, Jeep fans can take solace in the fact that they’re likely driving the most American vehicles around.

We can stake this bold claim thanks to Cars.com’s 2019 American-made Index, which has just declared the Cherokee as the most American vehicle you can buy today. It’s the second-straight year Cherokee has nabbed this honor. And it’s the third consecutive year a Jeep has landed at the top of the list after the Wrangler won in 2017. ‘Murica.

Cars.com has conducted this annual study since 2006 in an attempt to help Americans, well, buy American. But that’s become increasingly difficult to do, as there are so many different parts from so many different places that go into building every vehicle on the market. Heck, spots 2-4 on their index belong to Honda, if that makes any sense.

But that’s in part due to the first criteria for making the cut. Each of Cars.com’s top 15 models are assembled here in the U.S. The Jeep Cherokee, of course, is put together in Belvidere, Illinois. They also analyze the origin of parts in each vehicle as reported for the American Automotive Labeling Act. They then consider the origin country for the car’s engines and transmissions, as well as the number of Americans employed at the factories relative to the number of cars the manufacturer sells.

Using all of that data, Cars.com discovered that the Jeep Cherokee topped 100 other models in terms of American-ness. That’s obviously just another feather in the cap of a vehicle that’s got plenty of them. Best of all, Jeep fans can take solace knowing that they’re not just talking the talk. They’re also doing their part to support American manufacturing. And in this day and age, that’s arguably more important than ever.
