Handy New Guide Helps Us Choose a Top for Our Jeep Wrangler
Whether you’re looking for a new soft, hard, stock, or custom top for your Wrangler, here’s a nice breakdown of Extreme Terrain options.
When it comes to Jeep Wrangler mods, some are obviously more popular than others. Wheels and tires rank near the top, as do bumpers and lift kits. Then there are tops, which like most other Wrangler parts, are plentiful on the aftermarket. But oftentimes, the hardest part of choosing the right top is simply narrowing down the incredible number of options available, and that’s exactly what this video from ExtremeTerrain is here to help with.
In this particular video, XT host Meredith Evasew reviews seven of the more popular tops on the market today – three hard tops and four soft tops – and shows them off installed on a JK and JL Jeep Wrangler. All of these tops are also available for the YJ and TJ generations as well, however, so this information is pertinent to owners of those models as well.
First up are one-piece hard tops, which Evasew says are “great if you’re looking for a no-hassle hard top and you really don’t need every bell and whistle that some of the other options come with.” That simplicity also means a lower price. Next up are two-piece hard tops, which allow you to remove the front piece and leave the back piece on for a less cumbersome open-air experience.
For those that want to add a little unique style to their Jeep Wrangler, a slant back top is a great option. The only real downside is a reduction in cargo space, as Evasew points out. Moving on to soft tops, the first choice is a complete replacement top, which is a nice choice for those that only own a hard top and are looking to switch over to a soft top in the warmer months, or those looking to replace a damaged or faded soft top.
Like hard tops, soft tops are available in two basic styles – square back and slanted/fast back. “A lot of the tops are going to come with different features from the factory design,” Evasew said. “Some may have a premium twill material that is a little bit heavier than the factory black diamond. Some options will have zipperless windows. Some will even have the ability to be changed into a bikini top by just simply taking off those back windows.”
There are many Jeep Wrangler top options out there on the market, but this video does a nice job of breaking them down into easy-to-understand categories. And that’s the first step in choosing the right top for your Jeep, of course. The next step is to head over to Extreme Terrain, scope out all of the top options available, and narrow those selections down to the perfect fit for your particular needs.
