Gladiator Vid Reminds us That Quarantine Doesn’t Have to Suck

By -

Amidst the depressing global chaos, Shaun from The Story Til Now and his Jeep Gladiator remind us that being alone isn’t always bad.

Yes, we know. We’ve read the headlines, the stats, and heard what many political leaders have to say. It’s depressing and horrifying. Shopping for groceries is now a risk on yours or a loved one’s life. Everyone’s expected to stand six feet apart from one another. Lastly, the expectation people seem to be struggling with the most is self-isolation. Those of a more introverted make-up don’t seem to be suffering much from having to stay indoors. It’s the extroverted ones that are having the most trouble. Though, one man and his Jeep Gladiator decided to document how he chose to make the best of this awful situation.

Shaun from The Story Til Now is becoming well-known for his editing style and stunning videography of the Canadian wilderness. Although this video starts off brilliantly capturing the anxiety felt by many of us, Shaun did not disappoint with his drone work. Snowy peaks, pristine and undisturbed lakes, and wide open skies served as an important reminder for us (and Shaun) to hold what we have dear.

“We all know what’s going on in the world right now,” writes Shaun in the video description. “Self-isolation, social distancing, stopping the spread of this awful thing. Our original video for this week got canceled due to this whole situation, plus I’ve spent the last week at home with the flu, which is a bit unnerving in these strange times. Yesterday I finally felt better, and I decided to isolate myself as far as possible, on top of a mountain. Sit back, relax and come along for the ride.”

Before Shaun saddles up to disappear in the mountains, we see him wearing a mask over his mouth. He stares into the camera with a solemn and pained expression before he starts packing up his Gladiator for a solo trip to the mountains. Somber and slow music plays in the background to set the mood – and before the tarmac turned to dirt, only one other car was spotted.

“It’s a bit different than what I usually do, and there’s no talking at all, and no voice over because my voice is still raspy,” says Shaun in the comment section. “But I feel like in these somewhat dark times right now, a relaxing adventure in the mountains might be just want you’ll want to see.”

With every foot gained in elevation came more stunning drone footage of the Canadian countryside. From the drone, one could see the Gladiator slowly trekking the trail. By no means is it a small vehicle – but from the sky, it looked like an insect. Reminding us all that while the COVID-19 problem is a big one, the world is so much bigger. And when it’s all over, our beautiful world will still be there, as long as we do our part to minimize the spread (like being alone on a mountain top).

When Shaun makes it to the top of the mountain, he parks the Gladiator on the side of the trail. Once parked, he gets out of the Jeep and begins to wander. Upon realizing the fact that there wasn’t another human being for several miles in either direction, he removes his mask and breathes in the fresh mountain air.

After being cooped up in the house sick from the flu, and being surrounded by uncertainty and frightening headlines, being alone with his Jeep was exactly what he needed. And being able to watch his documented journey and the beauty in which our world has to offer, it reminded us once again that being alone isn’t the worst thing. As long as you’ve got a Jeep and venture onto trails you’re familiar with, going slow and enjoying the peace and quiet might be just what you need to reconnect with what matters most: yourself.
