Heavy Metal: Ford Bronco vs. Wrangler 4xe Dragstrip Showdown
Wrangler 4xe was able to post a zero to 60 time roughly three full seconds faster than the Bronco.
The Ford Bronco is having a moment. We’re actually happy for the gang over at Ford. We believe that competition is a good thing.
In the spirit of competition, The Fast Lane Car on YouTube set up a drag race between the new Bronco and a Jeep Wrangler 4xe. As a bit of a teaser, the crew also pitted the Bronco against an older Toyota FJ Cruiser. While the Jeep is obviously our favorite, it was neat to see these three off-road icons reunited.
After the warm-up race, the Bronco was riding high (no pun intended) from defeating the FJ Cruiser. The Bronco seen here had the larger 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, which produces 310 horsepower and 400 lb/ft of torque. Credit where credit’s due – that’s not bad at all. However, how will it stack up against the Jeep Wrangler 4xe?
Electric Power and Performance
After all, he hybrid Wrangler 4xe employs a turbo four combined with an electric motor to generate 375 horsepower and a whopping 470 lb-ft of torque. If you know anything about electric motors, you probably know that that torque delivery down low is nearly instantaneous.
Besides the horsepower and torque disadvantage, the Bronco’s acceleration performance is further hampered by its massive 35″ tall tires. Those tires – part of the Sasquatch off-road package – help with clearance and traction off-road. On-road, however, it’s a different story.
The main event of the video is the Jeep vs. Ford drag race, and the results are rather predictable. The Wrangler, with its higher torque and smaller tires, positively wipes the floor with the Bronco.
Furthermore, the Wrangler 4xe was able to post a zero to 60 time roughly three full seconds faster than the Bronco. We can’t even begin to image what this race would have been like had the Bronco been equipped with the kinder, gentler 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo four instead.
These days, it seems as though very few of us are actually off-roading our Jeeps. Then again, not many of us are drag racing, either.
With that said, it always feels good to carve another notch into the Jeep’s belt for its tremendous power and reliability. Critics love the Wrangler 4xe, and we don’t blame them. It’s quiet, capable, and, now, a true dragstrip performer. What’s not to like?
