You’ve Heard It Before: “Warm up Your Jeep to Avoid Damaging the Engine.” But Is That Really the Case?
Us Jeep owners like to think our 4×4 machines are somewhat indestructible. After all, Jeeps were created to face the toughest of conditions, where luxuries like “time” and “patience” simply don’t exist. Whether it’s the battlefield or the gnarliest of trails, Jeeps are meant to be tough.
But are they so tough that you shouldn’t warm up your Jeep’s engine? Or should you not? People like to think that idling their Jeeps on a cold morning helps reduce wear and tear. While others like to hop in, throw it in gear, and take off. Who’s right, and who’s wrong? After all, do most of us really know the logic behind the mythical “engine warm up?”

The folks at Engineering Explained certainly do. In the video above, they breakdown the possible benefits, or even harmful characteristics of idling your vehicle. A warm up was required back in the carburetor days, but not anymore. Modern fuel injection works wonders, and idling an engine for more than five or ten minutes could actually be harmful.
We won’t attempt to explain it to you, as they do that really well in the video. But are you willing to accept these facts and change a lifelong behavior? Or will you take it as crazy talk? In addition, does this video really apply to all vehicles and situations? Only you can be the judge.
