Camp Jeep LA Auto Show: Wrangler 392, 4xe & Grand Cherokee L Demo
We attend Camp Jeep at the LA Auto Show and get a taste of what some of Jeeps hottest products are capable of.
JK Forum editor Derin Richardson attended Camp Jeep at the recent LA Auto Show. Richardson was able to get demo rides in the Wrangler 392, the Wrangler 4xe and the Grand Cherokee L. These are arguably the hottest models in the Jeep lineup today. And while this is not a full-on road test, or an off-road adventure Camp Jeep does demonstrate what these vehicles are capable of. Richardson recently posted a video of the experience on the Internet Brands Auto Group YouTube channel.
Each of these vehicles have a different purpose and mission but they are all very much a Jeep. So being a Jeep they need to be able to do Jeep things more than anything else. The obstacles setup at Camp Jeep are setup to show just what these vehicles can do. Spoiler alert. They can do a lot. Let’s take a closer look at each of them.
Wrangler 4xe Rubicon
The 4xe is of course the plug-in hybrid Wrangler. If the term plug-in hybrid, has you thinking this is somehow going to be a weak Jeep we should remind you it makes 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The first obstacle for the 4xe is an off-camber ramp that it tackles easy with the sway bar disconnected. Next up is the breakover test which the 4xe also passes with flying colors.
The Jeep then moves to a ramp that puts the rollover angle to the test. The Jeep is at an angle of 25 degrees and doesn’t break a sweat. Ground clearance is tested next as the 4xe is driven up a set of stairs. Another easy task for the Jeep. The final obstacle is a 35-degree ramp. Piece of cake. “There you have it folks; simply amazing,” Says Richardson.
Grand Cherokee L
The Grand Cherokee L has a different mission than any of the Wrangler models. This Jeep is all about technology and comfort. It can fit up to seven passengers in three rows. And the Overland edition that was at Camp Jeep even had massaging front seats and night vision. But it does still say Jeep on the hood, so it has to perform. It made quick work of the off-camber obstacle.
On the breakover obstacle the Grand Cherokee L does lift a wheel off the ground unlike the Wrangler that keeps all the wheels planted. However, it gets over the obstacle just fine. It conquers the rollover angle, ground clearance and 35-degree ramp obstacles with ease. For a Jeep this size and with all the comfort options the fact that it handles everything so easily is quite impressive.
Wrangler Rubicon 392
Now for the star of the show. A Wrangler with a 6.4L Hemi that can do all the normal things expected of a Rubicon. But can also scoot to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and sound great doing it. The 392 takes on all the same obstacles but it is so easy for it that it is almost laughable.
You will probably also giggle every time you step on the gas and hear that wonderful V8. “It outperforms every other Jeep flawlessly,” said Richardson. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 does it all.
Wrap Up
All the Jeeps performed extremely well. The 4xe is by far the most efficient. The Grand Cherokee L is the most luxurious. And of course, the 392 is the top performer. But each one of them earn that Jeep badge. Checkout the video below to see for yourself.
