Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler is fully restored, fitted with modern electronics and upgraded chassis components, courtesy of Ball and Buck.

Ball and Buck is best known for their outdoor apparel and their unique expeditions but with their newest project, the company is selling restored, modified Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler pickups. You read that right. According to Gear Patrol, the company will soon sell shirts, pants, hunting trips, fishing trips and better-than-new pickups from the 1980s. We say better-than-new because they classic Jeep pickups are not only fully restored, but they are also modified in a variety of ways, all while maintaining the original look.

Classic Jeep Exterior

The Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler pickups being sold by Ball and Buck begin with a full frame-off restoration, with buyers picking between Coronado Sand, Everglades Green, Chesapeake Grey and Sutton Black. In addition to the like-new, freshly painted body, these restored Scramblers have hand carved American Cypress bed rails, Quadratec LED leadlights, custom heavy duty stainless steel bumpers, a custom rollbar-mounted full size spare wheel, a tow hitch with a 2,000-pound capacity, a hard top, a five-foot pickup bed and American Racing aluminum wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich tires.

As you can see in the pictures here, while there are quite a few modern upgrades, the Ball and Buck CJ-8 keeps the classic Jeep look.

Premium Interior

Next, Ball and Buck leaves its mark with a customized interior, beginning with unique signature canvas upholstery with camouflaged inserts on the seats and door panels. The unique canvas is countered by leather accents throughout the cabin and hand-knurled brass knobs, including the shifter and the heating system controls.

Other interior appointments include a Tuffy security glovebox and console, a Ball and Buck gun case, modern instrumentation with GPS, modern heat with R143A air conditioning and an Alpine stereo system with Polk speakers. The result is a classic Jeep Scrambler pickup with a modern touch, keeping with the outdoorsman theme.

Mechanical Bits

Finally, the Ball and Buck Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler pickup comes standard with a 4.2-liter inline-six engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, but buyers can also opt for a General Motors LS3 V8 or a 2.8-liter Cummins four-cylinder turbo diesel. That allows buyers to pick between classic power, modern V8 power or some hard-working, fuel-friendly diesel torque.

The power from the engine is sent to all four wheels by means of a part time four-wheel-drive system with lockable manual free-wheeling front hubs, a two-speed transfer case and a Detroit Trutrac limited slip differential out back.

Ordering

The Ball and Buck Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler looks like an amazing package, but there are two downsides. First, the price of these fully restored, modified Jeep pickups begins at $65,000 and climbs to $105,000 with options. If you are interested in one, the first step is to fill out an order form, which includes a mandatory down payment of $1,776. When the company gets close to your build slot, that is when they contact you for the full configuration information. That is also when you get your actual pricing.

Lead time on these custom Jeeps in mid-February was three to four months, so anyone serious about buying one of these Scramblers should sign up right away.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
