California-based American Fastbacks’ dual purpose Wrangler Unlimited has a Volkswagen Westfalia-style pop-up tent that fits two on the roof.

In the past, we’ve seen plenty of people take their Wranglers thousands of miles on and off-road. They turn their Jeeps into no-nonsense home bases. They drive them where few other vehicles can go. Then they post up there with bare-bones necessities. But one company has taken to modifying Wranglers into downright sophisticated homes away from home. And believe it or not, it suits the Jeep pretty well.

California-based fiberglass hardtop company American Fastbacks has long been known for their unique sloping tops for Wranglers. Now, it’s taking things to a whole other level. The American Fastbacks Badlands, is a modified Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that’s both trail rig and base camp.

Up top, there’s a Volkswagen Westfalia-style pop-up tent that fits two on the roof. Inside, the rear seats fold flat, creating a space for an additional two sleepers. There’s also an impressively packaged galley in the back, complete with refrigerator, propane stove, and sink. Keep in mind, this is all while the rear seats remain intact.

To handle the rough stuff, the Badlands Wrangler benefits from a 2.5-inch lift kit, and 20-inch wheels with 35-inch tires mounted. New front and rear bumpers help with approach and departure angles. A 10,500-pound winch should be enough to get you out of whatever trouble you can get into.

Cosmetically, a new grille and fenders, LED trail lighting, and retractable running boards set the Badlands apart from the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, American Fastbacks doesn’t list a price for a Badlands conversion, but if you’re interested, it suggests you contact your local American Fastbacks dealer. Overlanding is tough, but the Wrangler makes it as easy as it can be. If you’ve got some money to spend and don’t want to build your own rig, the Badlands might be the turn-key answer to your prayers.
