Gas Guage - How low can you go?
I've got an '09 4 door Rubicon, and without carrying around a gas can and testing this myself, I was wondering how many more miles you can get after the warning light comes on.
So far I've gone 25 miles. The mileage count down seems to stop at 30 before you get the low fuel message.
Anyone test this to the limit?

i have heard that you can burn out the fuel pump if you run a tank dry... i dunno... to be honest, it may be a non-existent issue in newer vehicles. who knows... but i try not to dip below an 1/8 of a tank
all i know is when i hear the ding i have to get gas so i don't run out on my way to or from school, and thats about 15-20 miles when i hear the ding though that also means an automatic $40.00 lol
i feel like the light does come on a little early in these jeeps. in my old jeep once the light came on you were almost out. this one when the light comes on theres still one trip to work in there
my warning go in phases...like everyone elses.
First the gas light
Then the DTE changes from estimated milage to 'Lo Fuel'
But the needle is still a little above red line.
Anyway, I went 50-55 miles after the "Lo Fuel" flashed..Interstate. So estimated the remaining DTE (30 miles) plus 20-25 miles.
I was on a road trip I take often and had my normal pit stops. Normally I would still have a 1/4 tank left. Well a few days prior I threw on new, larger tires....duh!!! I was cruising along when I heard "ding" I thought..WTF...needless to say I slowed down on the interstate to 60-65 mph, coasted on the down slope, and drafted off of every semi truck I could for 50 miles.
Oh and when I filled up I calculated I had .4 gallons left. I have to go back and look, but I think we have a 22 gallon tank..well I filled up to 21.6
I actually thought about trying the gas tank thing, but I don't know what it would do to the Jeep if I ran it out. I don't know if its like a lawnmower where it just stalls and you refill. But even then, you still have to prime it.

I believe this to be true, I mess up two of my cars pumps, a chevy and a vw I used to run in low very often, now I try to put gas as soon as the light turns.
I usually fill up once the warning comes on. I fill up usually once a day.
Greatest part for me though...I haven't paid for a drop of gas that I've put into my Jeep to date. Feels great to not feel that current $40 pain.

If you run out of fuel just turn off the key after you have stopped this will kill the power to the fuel pump. No worries of burning it up. The fuel system is self priming. But you will have air in the system so expect a very rough start till all the air works out in a few seconds.
Reminds me of when i was driving a 20 year old dodge power wagon with a broken fuel gauge. I keeped 5 gallons in the bed and ran it till it started to run out of fuel, i'd pull over, put in the 5 gallons, and fill up shortly there after including the 5 gallon fuel can.
