Nah, seriously thanks for all the input, ya'll. I'll get some RTV and go to town! I want to eventually get some beefier diff covers, but right now the money is an issue and it's the lift I'm spending money on first.

Yet another problem solved on my favorite forum
Not to get off track, but how did the bedlining of the bumpers go? I'm thinking about doing that as well. Got any pics of the results?

Bedlining went well, though it would have gone better had I been more familiar with the product. Reading "adds rubberized texture" on the can translated in my head to "covers up really big rough spots without sanding or filling," so there are some not-so-uniform spots on mine. If you spend even a little time with some sort of bondo or filler and then smooth it out, you wont even notice the transition. I really was impressed with it, as were many people on this forum. Just don't expect miracles on those deep scratches.

That info. conflicts with the 12-15 the factory recommends. If it's a mall crawler your info. "might" work out but surely not if you tow something on the road. For an offroad vehicle your recommendation is guaranteed suicide. I change more frequently than 12K because I like to go through water. Almost every time I have changed mine after a water trip there has been some cloudy to milky in there.

Hmm

I ran my '78 El Camino > 180K miles and never even looked at the diff, let alone change the fluid. That being said, I check the YJ after every offroading trip and change if it looks milky, or gets too black. Wife's '07 JK with 30K miles and similar leakage, I'll probably change it soon. The '09 gets offroaded more often, so I'll check it regularly too.

Both my axles look worse than that and aren't losing any fluid. It's a build-up, that's all. Don't worry about it.

Look at your Owners' Manual. There are two service schedules. Decide which one describes you, then follow it.

My diff looked exactly the same. I took it into the dealer and they put fresh fluid in and resealed it all under warranty and I even had a rock hit my diff.

If you are going to do it yourself, this is a good time to paint your diff cover if you really every thought about doing that. I just did on my rear diff!

Then you need to extend your breather tubes if water is getting in.
