Jeep Wrangler JK: How to Make a Door Hanger

Wouldn't it be great to have a device to hang your doors on to protect them from possible damage and give them a proper space of their own? Follow these simple instructions to make your own door hanger.

This article applies to the Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-present).

This door hanger will keep your doors out of harm's way after you take them off to go free-styling. They also help keep your garage or storage area free of clutter. Make these door hangers for cheap and protect the investment you made in your Jeep Wrangler.

Materials Needed

  • 55-inch long piece of 2 X 12 lumber
  • 4 "Heavy Duty Arm Hangers" or similar
  • 6 3/8" X 3" lag bolts
  • 6 3/8" fender washers
  • 8 1/4" X 2" lag bolts
  • Electric drill
  • Ratchet
  • 3/8" and 1/4" sockets
  • 1/8" drill bit
  • Driver bit (optional)
  • Measuring device
  • Stud finder (optional)

For safety reasons and for a stronger set of door hooks, use the above hardware rather than the hardware that comes with the hooks.

Step 1 – Measure

  • With your measuring device, measure 1-1/2" in from the left side of the 55-inch board and mark it for hook placement. Measure 12" to the left of the first hook and mark that area for bolt placement.
  • With your measuring device, measure 2-1/2" in from the right side of the 55-inch board and mark for hook placement. Measure 16" to the left of that hook and mark that area for bolt placement.

Step 2 – Mount the hooks on the board

  • Use your drill and 1/8" drill bit to drill pilot holes where you marked the positions on the left side of the piece of lumber (see previous step). After drilling the pilot holes, use your ratchet and 1/4" socket to install 4 1/4" X 2" lag bolts and two hooks on the left side of the piece of lumber.
  • Use your drill and 1/8" drill bit to drill pilot holes where you marked the positions on the right side of the piece of lumber (see previous step). After drilling the pilot holes, use your ratchet and 1/4" socket to install 4 1/4" X 2" lag bolts and the other two hooks on the right side of the piece of lumber.

Pro Tip

Make sure to drill the pilot holes all the way into the areas where you will install the bolts.

Step 3 – Mount the board on the wall

Use the stud finder to locate three studs on a wall where you want to mount the board with hooks installed. With your 1/8" drill bit and electric drill, drill pilot holes through the board and into the wall. Place a 3/8" fender washer on a 3/8" X 3" lag bolt and then screw the bolt through the board into the wall. Do the same for the remaining five washers and bolts.

Pro Tip

You can use your electric drill and a driver bit to tighten the lag bolts.
