Default Cold Air Intake - Which is best? What is your experience?

Hey guys!

I'm new to this forum, but not new to customizing my vehicles. I have a 2007 JK Sahara that I'd like to put a cold-air-intake on. I really like the intake systems with oil-free filters. I just don't like the idea of introducing a oil to my air flow system.

I like the Volant kit for JKs, but they don't offer their "PowerCore" dry filter as of yet to fit this kit. I know that AEM makes a dry filter kit, but it doesn't have a Cold Air box around the filter, and I've never used an intake without a full Cold Air box before.

What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Just go to the top, click on "search" and type in "CAI". You'll have lots of info. Since I just LOVE givin my opinion, I will. LOL I don't like cold air intakes. Well.....I do. I like cold air intakes that WORK. Bottom line is, do your homework. Not all the claims are true. Keep in mind that it's really tougher than most think to improve upon a stock vehicle. I've looked at the Volant, myself. I think if I WAS gonna get one, that might be it. I'll tell you this: I would NEVER get one that is not a FULL elclosed air box seperating the engine heat from the filter intake. That just defeats the purpose. Now that I've said all that, I'm leavin mine stock. LMAO

Because of reading I get when using my scan gauge, I attempted to find a source of colder air under the hood. Obviously some spots are hotter than others, but ALL of the air anywhere near the air box area has come though the radiator and is about 12 to 20 degrees warmer than ambient. Unless you find a way to route in air that has not been though the rad, you won't get colder air.

Yup, I go along with that. I just bet though, that since that little duct that comes off the air box is so close to the space between the hood and fender it gets a little bit of outside air. Also, for someone who wants to get frisky (I might even do it) there is a space right at the front corner coming through the radiator support to open cold air in front. A duct hose could easily be attached to the stock air box for a true CAI. Now if done this way, you'd need to be careful fording water over the grille. LMAO.

Hi Folks! While my input on this is limited to say the least, my Dealers Service Manager told me if I brought my JK in for servicing and it had a CAI system installed (I do not have any intentions of installing one due to my particular use of the JEEP), he would take pictures of it, document its manufacturer etc, and void out the engine portion of the warranty. I don't know the legalities of his warning but it isn't an issue in my case. Just thought I'd pass it on though. DC may have issued an internal memo demanding that the service managers do this? Take care... Mike

He can't do that. It's against the law. The engine has to have a warranty issue that is PROVEN to be the fault of the aftermarket intake. That's the only way they can refuse any warranty repairs. Even then, they cannot void the entire engine warranty, only THAT repair at THAT time. He's an idiot. find another dealer.

Hi! Thanks for the input. I have read several posts stating as you have about "proving" that any mod must be the actual cause. I am very happy with this Dealership and the Service Manager. Perhaps this may be a battle that someone else may need to fight but in my particular situation it isn't worth my time and energy. Besides being my DD, I bought the JEEP to assist me at Search and Rescue Missions. When I get a bit uncomfortable with the terrain I'm driving on I park it out of the way, strap my pack on, and hoof it the rest of the way in. To me she is just another piece of equipment and I probably reach my "pucker factor" well before the JEEP does. Take care... Mike
